Ghost Dance

Ghost Dance was my Masters Thesis project at NYU in 1989. I worked at the American Indian Community House as the Receptionist and Dog’s Body in those years and wrote the book to Ghost Dance, working with Native American actors and in consultation with the community. The community house was the only place where, cleaning storage areas, if you see a box labeled Buffalo Skin, there’s gonna be a buffalo skin inside. With composer Michael Wright who had Cherokee blood, directed by Artie Mitchell who was Hal Prince’s right hand man. Hal came to our preview in Manhattan. We won the San Diego Theatre Festival that year and were optioned for B’way. I had three pieces optioned for Broadway in a two year span and for one reason or another, none of them got to the big stage. It’s a magical art form, but a frustrating business.
