Two Thousand Fish

Two Thousand Fish was my first play. It is a rhythm piece, written to the pace of three birth contractions. There is a small jazz band on stage, originally led by the great Bill Spencer (RIP Bill). The characters are Mother desperately trying to withhold the true circumstances of  her husband’s death insisting that he drown in the pond; Her daughter, Darlos, seeking to breakthrough the family myth of her father’s demise and get to the terrible truth; The Midwife whose job is to control the rhythm of the birth and the play. And Angel who guides Darlos home.

Two Thousand Fish was originally produced by Robert Woodruff (Sam Shepard’s director for many years) in 1984. It was produced twice more in Los Angeles, and written up in Sunset Magazine as a a part of the future of West Coast theatre.
